A group of 22 job seeker students of Belong’s “Pathways to Working in Healthcare” training program enjoyed an informative day at our Brisbane Careers in Disability Expo on 28th June.

Belong is a community based organisation that helps unemployed people develop the vocational and soft skills required for entry level work in a range of industries.

A popular program is the “Pathways to Working in Healthcare”. A Community Work Skills program; it is one of seven programs that make up the Queensland Government’s Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative. Participants complete 10 weeks of theory based training followed by 120 hours experience working in a disability organisation. On successful completion, participants achieve a Certificate III in Individual Support. The goal is employment in the disability sector.

Many of the “Pathways to Working in Healthcare” participants are from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Some have also worked in a carer role in their home countries. Highly motivated, they engage enthusiastically in learning activities to increase their knowledge of working as a carer for people living with disability. The diverse backgrounds of participants offer employers in the sector a skilled staff member that can work with a broad range of clients.

The students actively participated at the Expo by visiting the employers stands and discussing what it is like to work in the sector and learning about job opportunities. Feedback from the students was that the presentation sessions were excellent. Students commented that hearing firsthand about what a person with disability is looking for in a carer reinforced their learnings and brought it all together. They left the Expo feeling even more motivated to pursue their career of choice.

The students made connections with employers on the day and follow up meetings are likely to result in future job opportunities.
